What Is My Body Type/How Do I Know My Body Type?

Did you know that the somatotypes, AKA the three body types — endomorph, ectomorph, mesomorph — as well as the triangle body types, 10 body types, hormone body types, etc. are not grounded in any real science? They are arbitrary, subjective shapes with no actual scientific basis.

Current mainstream science and medical doctors define body type by three main scientific standards:

  1. The Standard Scientific Human Body Anatomy Book Body Type One (BT1) found in any mainstream scientific human body anatomy book (directly influenced by genetics/DNA), with fully developed muscles/muscle mass, no less
  2. Body Mass Index (BMI), calculated directly relative to the BT1
  3. Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), which is the number of calories per day your specific body needs for basic survival functioning, calculated directly relative to the BT1 and BMI

Body Type Quiz, Standard Scientific Human Body Anatomy Book Body Type One (BT1) - Scientific What Is My Body Type Quiz/Test
Standard Scientific Human Body Anatomy Book Body Type One (BT1)

Mainstream science (scientists and medical doctors) says that your body (really every human body) looks identical to the Standard Scientific Human Body Anatomy Book Body Type One (BT1) so long as your body is safely within your scientifically/medically safe BMI weight range. The only exception is if a licensed medical doctor has diagnosed you with a specific malformation, underdevelopment, abnormality, or the like (such as Poland syndrome or scoliosis), which, all things relative, is rare. So, have you been diagnosed by a licensed mainstream medical doctor with a specific abnormality, malformation, underdevelopment, or the like?

The Importance of Skinny Fat

If not, then why are you experiencing skinny fat? The skinny fat phenomenon (some form of fat including cellulite, thin fat, saggy skin, loose skin, crepey skin, and/or normal weight obesity) means having an unusual amount of fat on your body even though you are safely within your medically/scientifically safe BMI weight range. Normal weight obesity is defined as having too much fat on your body when within your safe BMI weight range and carries with it the same relative risks as the disease of obesity. Obesity is having too much fat on your body which takes you outside your safe BMI weight range.

Again, mainstream science and medical doctors say every human being is born in a BT1. So, why do you have skinny fat where there should be muscles/muscle mass when within your safe BMI? Where is the muscle/mass? In people under 40, especially people under 30, there is no scientific evidence that shows that safe weight loss causes a loss of default muscle/mass — during safe weight loss, the body will always burn fat and calories consumed first.

Why Current Body Type Standards are Not Accurate – Scientific Body Type Quiz (Women/Men)

The Standard Scientific Human Body Anatomy Book Body Type One (BT1) is not accurate because, genetically, it is a fact that any part of the human body can be underdeveloped or undeveloped, to whatever degree. This includes muscles/muscle mass and vertebrae/posture. If you are within safe BMI but still have skinny fat where there should be muscles/mass, this is due to genetics.

Scientific Body Type Quiz - BMI Weight Scale
Body Mass Index (BMI) Weight Range Scale

Body Mass Index (BMI) is not accurate because, genetically, skinny fat, including normal weight obesity, is real (both terms are quite new, only being recognized by science in the last decade or so). If, when within safe BMI, you have skinny fat in place of where there should be muscle on your body, it directly affects your metabolism, no less. This is because one pound of muscle mass burns six (6) calories per day, but one pound of skinny fat and/or fat burns only two (2) to three (3) calories per day. As well, it is possible to have excess muscle mass on your body which will put you into the overweight or obese columns of your BMI weight scale, but because you do not have excess fat on your body you are not overweight or obese.

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is not accurate because, metabolically, the scientifically calculated standard Mifflin St Jeor equation and Harris-Benedict equation for activity do not take into account skinny fat. The more skinny fat you have on your body, particularly when within safe BMI, the more negatively your metabolism is affected (fat/skinny fat burns fewer calories than muscle), the less accurate your BMR calculations are, and thus the fewer calories your body actually needs daily.

What Is My Body Type, Scientific Body Type Test/Quiz Variables – How to Know What Your Body Type Is

What Is My Body Type - The Four Body Types, Body Type Quiz Male/Men & Women/Female)
The Four Body Types

The Scientific Body Type Quiz for women and men uses widely accepted science-based variables including diet, exercise, lifestyle, metabolism, BMI, BMR, and genetics/DNA, no less. Whether biologically male or female, the Body Type Test helps you identify your muscle mass development (or lack thereof) and skinny fat based on the vertebrae in your spine. There are 26 vertebrae in the human spine (24 moveable and two fixed bones) — cervical (7), thoracic (12), lumbar (5), sacrum (1), coccyx (1).

Body Type One (BT1) – All 26 Vertebrae Fully Developed, relative to the 24 Moveable & Two Fixed Bones (0 Vertebrae Underdeveloped in relation to Posture & Muscles/Muscle Mass)

Body Type Two (BT2) – Between 25 and 18 Vertebrae Fully Developed, relative to the 24 Moveable & Two Fixed Bones (1-8 Vertebrae Underdeveloped in relation to Posture & Muscles/Muscle Mass)

Body Type Three (BT3) – Between 17 and 09 Vertebrae Fully Developed, relative to the 24 Moveable & Two Fixed Bones (9-17 Vertebrae Underdeveloped in relation to Posture & Muscles/Muscle Mass)

Body Type Four (BT4) – Between 08 to 0 Vertebrae Fully Developed, relative to the 24 Moveable & Two Fixed Bones (18-26 Vertebrae Underdeveloped in relation to Posture & Muscles/Muscle Mass)

The Four Body Types - Scientific Body Type Quiz Examples, BT1, BT2, BT3, BT4
Note how the Body Type One (BT1) looks identical to the Standard Scientific Human Body Anatomy Book Body Type One (BT1) (see above) with all muscles and muscle mass fully developed, yet the obvious lack of muscles/muscle mass on the Body Type Two (BT2) around no less than lumbar 1, Body Type Three (BT3) around no less than thoracic 5-12, and Body Type Four (BT4) pretty much everywhere.

Scientific Body Type Quiz Results – Science-Based Metabolism & Health Scores

The Body Type Quiz scientifically calculates your science-based Mifflin St Jeor formula FORMR metabolism score. It takes into account skinny fat to determine the Standard Mifflin and Adjusted Mifflin BMRs and whether you have a slow or normal metabolism (fast is not possible at this time). The Harris-Benedict formula calculates the FORMA metabolic rate score to gauge your activity level, be it decreased, steady, or increased.

Further, the Quiz/Test also measures the basic science-based diet, exercise, and lifestyle FORCA health score. Moreover, it tallies the more comprehensive science-based diet, exercise, and lifestyle FORTH health score. Finally, skinny fat and fat tendencies (overweight or obese, including childhood and adult obesity) are identified.

All of which offers final results that allow you to better understand how to know what your body type is, be it a Body Type One (BT1), Body Type Two (BT2), Body Type Three (BT3), or Body Type Four (BT4) — one of The Four Body Types.

The Somatotypes or body types as they are popularly called were first described by W.Sheldon as endomorphs mesomorphs and ectomorphs based on temperament and body types, these somatotypes have been disproved by a lot of scientists as there is currently no proof to back these body types up. These somatotypes have never been scientifically validated by actual controlled experiments. You can check this out on https://muscleevo.net/body-type/

The Hormonal Body types were popularised by a weight loss expert, Eric Berg, who described the Adrenal, Thyroid, Liver and Ovary body types based on hormonal imbalances, as the reason many people could not lose weight or gain weight. It is very interesting to note that there is actually no science backing these body types. Not one research paper!

On the other hand, This quiz takes on a more holistic and scientific approach of considering variables that could contribute to an individuals weight such as Genetics, BMI, Skinny fat, Diet, exercise, lifestyle as well as metabolism. All these variables have at one point or the other been proven by research as factors that influence weight gain thus giving this quiz a very strong scientific backing. This is further validated by https://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/weight-management/adult-overweight-obesity/factors-affecting-weight-health

Before now, I used to think I was a borderline meso/endomorph (I never quite found a type that fit perfectly) however upon participation in this quiz, I have discovered that I am a Body type 3. I really appreciate the fact that some of the questions about my weight have been provided by this quiz.

It was eye-opening to have the scientific evidence (based on the Fellow One Research Body Type Science data) that the mainstream way that we are taught about body types isn't accurate or scientific. Based on the evidence provided by Fellow One, a person can fall into certain statistical categories which defines them as a specific scientific body type - a Body Type One/BT1, Two/BT2, Three/BT3, or Four/BT4. The mainstream says everyone is a BT1, even if they are experiencing skinny fat and have underdeveloped musculature. Learning about the many other factors taken into account, (which areas of your body experience skinny fat and fat, genetics, vertebrae, muscle mass, and posture, etc.) gives a better understanding of your specific body needs to help in terms of your specific body type (and health) based on your specific metrics.

Some of the previous theories on body types lacked proper scientific evidence and study. For example, the somatotype research done by Dr. Sheldon in the 1940s, while sadly it's still widely used today, those endomorph, ecotmorph, mesomorph body types have been fully debunked as nonsense. See this link for a quick synopsis on Sheldon's theory and why it's nonsense, lacking scientific basis and usefulness. https://www.reddit.com/r/gainit/comments/nm4x5p/two_articles_on_why_somatotypes_are_complete/

Overall I'm very happy with the information I've received about my body type.

The idea of body types was first popularized by American psychologist Dr. W.H. Sheldon in the early 1940’s. Sheldon categorized the human physique according to arbitrary shapes which he subjectively classified as ectomorph, endomorph, and mesomorph. He created the now debunked field of somatotypes and constitutional psychology which associated those body types with a person’s temperament. However, Sheldon’s theories of body types being correlated to personal characteristics and criminal behavior have been dismissed by the psychological community and in general. I did not realize those three body types are not scientific at all and not real body types.

I also did not know that the modern body type standards are the BT1, BMI, and BMR.

The best part about this Quiz is that the science backing it up is solid! This scientific quiz identifies the limitations of the modern body type standards and utilizes additional modern world variables to understand these limitations.

Before taking this Body Type Quiz, I thought I was Body Type One (BT1), even though deep down I knew I was a bit fatter according to the pictures and information on this website. I really wanted to not be a Body Type Two (BT2) because I didn't want to accept that fact. But, I can't deny the fact that I'm, at the moment, weighing around 159lbs, which is overweight. After carefully considering genetics and skinny fat and taking the quiz and seeing the results afterward, I really know that I'm not a Body Type One (BT1) but a BT2, due to all the fat and skinny fat / cellulite on my body where there should be muscle.

I must say that I know of no other scientific body type quizzes that are actually backed by science, but this one is on point!

I was surprised by how little I knew about the body after taking the quiz. I knew that many weight-related notions lacked a solid scientific foundation, but I wasn't aware of how how misunderstood bodies are in general. For instance, William Sheldon's three somatotype body kinds have dubious scientific foundations. Sheldon argued that a person's behavior is determined by their unique blend of the three somatotypes (ectomorph, endomorph, and mesomorph) in the 1940s, which was debunked no long after.
The science supporting The Four Body Types' Body Type Science Scientific Body Type Quiz, on the other hand, is based on reality because it recognizes the limitations of the current body type standards (BMI, BT1, and BMR) and makes use of additional factors, such as genetics, vertebrae, muscles & muscle mass, skinny fat, fat, diet, exercise, lifestyle, and metabolism, to get around these limitations.
By taking this test, I discovered that my body type is 4. (BT4)
I like how this quiz goes into great detail on what BT4 implies, including calculations of my metabolic rate and overall wellness. I feel my results are accurate and have enhanced my understanding of my body and health because of the amount of study that went into the quiz itself, as well as the extensive explanations offered inside my quiz results.

Somatotype is a discredited personality theory that associates different body compositions with different personality and behavioral traits. Somatotype refers to a person's body or physique. Theories of body composition and personality have existed since ancient times, but William Herbert Sheldon developed the figure in his 1940s. Sheldon's body type study has significant drawbacks, including mixed results, small sample size, and conflicting results. Nonetheless, the body type became widespread in his 1950s and was still used in serious attempts to characterize personality well into the 1980s. This is an inaccurate way to measure body’s

The science backing the The Four Body Types' Body Type Science Scientific Body Type Quiz takes a more holistic approach, including variables such as genetics, BMI, skinny fat, diet, exercise, lifestyle, as well as metabolism there are also a specific set of attributes that are identifiable which can place you in a category. At first, I predicted my body type incorrectly but after reviewing the quiz and the samples of the images to compare myself to I realized the subtle differences where I was lacking. I am identified as a BT2 and the body type quiz has shed a light on the steps I need to take to improve on my body composition and progress my physique.

Hello Leithi - just to be clear, you understand that Body Type Science focuses on genetics and skinny fat - in other words, genetically, not everyone is a Standard Scientific Human Body Anatomy Book Body Type One (BT1) as mainstream scientists and medical doctors claim once you are within safe BMI. Countless people in the world of all ages - young to old - deal with skinny fat where there should be muscle/mass, which directly, negatively affects metabolism, no less, as 1 pound of muscle mass burns 6 calories daily but 1 pound of skinny fat/fat only burns 2-3 calories. You stated in your Scientific Body Type Quiz Results that you were never a BT1, always either a BT2 or BT3. Why do you think you are not a BT1 and never have been, even though mainstream scientists and medical doctors adamantly claims that once you are within safe BMI you, like every other human being, are a BT1 (even if you are diagnosed with an abdnormality or underdevelopment, you are still a BT1 just with a specific diagnosis -- but you said on your Quiz you had never been diagnsised as such.)

I believe that I am a BT2 and never have been a BT1 because I have never been able to get rid of certain areas with skinny fat. Even as a young child I have always had skinny fat in certain areas, and I have never been able to get rid of it. Even when I am in a healthy range on the BMI. I realize that genetics play a huge part in it and I should try my best to do what I can but this test has helped me set realistic expectations for myself so that I don’t fall into the trap of body dysmorphia. Thank you for the help! 😊

Since I was little my body mass index has been low. It has never been dangerous and I have never suffered from obesity problems.
However, my body has always looked different from the body type 1. I have cellulite on my thighs and buttocks and I have trouble gaining muscle.
This investigation is more complete and takes into account more factors than the others, like muscle, genetics, skinny fat, diet, exercise, etc. I understand now why I'm a body type 2. It's not just about my weight and height, but about more other variants.
With this, I consider that the body mass index theory devised by Quetelet is not enough.
I found myself reading about Sheldon's theory of somatotypes. I consider that it was a probably useful theory in its time (1940) but now extremely limited. It divides the human body into three and considers that each of these types has a personality that is attached to it. I consider that this thought is not scientific at all and that it doesn't take into account different variables (which probably had not been studied at that time).
I was also surprised by the calculations provided by this study, as I consider them very accurate with my lifestyle.

This quiz was eye-opening for me–I was aware that a lot of theories related to weight aren’t entirely based in science, but I wasn’t aware of the extent to which bodies are generally misunderstood. The science behind the three somatotype body types proposed by William Sheldon, for example, is questionable at best. Sheldon posited in the 40s that each person is a unique combination of three somatotypes–ectomorph, endomorph, and mesomorph–and further asserted that these body types dictate a person’s behavior. To me, this theory is akin to the idea that blood types can determine how organized a person is.

In contrast, the science backing the The Four Body Types' Body Type Science Scientific Body Type Quiz is grounded in reality, as it acknowledges the limitations of current body type standards (BMI, BT1, and BMR) and utilizes additional variables, including genetics, vertebrae, muscles & muscle mass, skinny fat, fat, diet, exercise, lifestyle, and metabolism, to overcome these limitations. Through this quiz, I determined that I’m a Body Type 2 (BT2), which aligns with my understanding of my body and my past experiences with my weight. I appreciate that this quiz provides extensive details about what BT2 entails, including calculations of my metabolic rate and general health. Due to the amount of research that went into the quiz itself, along with the thorough explanations provided within my quiz results, I believe that my results are accurate and have improved my understanding of my body and health.

The body type quiz is not only for knowing my body type but also during the quiz I gained more science-based advice on my health for diet, exercise, and lifestyle.

I used to think 3 Somatotypes body types were real, but after researching more about them I found that those three body types are not based on real, actual science.

About the three SOMATOTYPES, subjective and arbitrary info:
*Ectomorphs are long and lean, with little body fat, and little muscle.
*Endomorphs, on the other hand, have lots of body fat, lots of muscle, and gain weight easily
*Mesomorphs are athletic, solid, and strong. "They're not overweight and not underweight," says Colby, "and they can eat what they want without worrying too much about it." They both gain and lose weight without too much effort.

You can read this artice to check why they are not scientific https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-science-behind-the-ectomorph-mesomorph-and-endomorph-bodytypes-if-there-is-any

But The Four Body Types are based on real, actual science, which is why I would like to invite you to take the test too because you will be able to know more about your life and you will gain new knowledge about your human body.

When reading articles on somatotype three body type theory, it is quickly found that that's all it is, a theory, most oftenly also trying (but failing) to link body types to personalities (Kretschmer, 1925; Morin, 2014). Three categories of body types were presumably first made up 25 centuries ago by Hippocrates. Sheldon (1940) continued on this principle and suggested a "constitution" theory, proposing the three body types known as endomorph, ectomorph, mesomorph, which has been subject to strong criticism ever since, and has never been proven. Therefore I would conclude that the science behind the somatotypes three body types is severely lacking.

Moreover, after thoroughly reviewing my body type quiz results, this scientific research gives an interesting new approach to the body types, one I hadn't heard of before. Knowing now, that I should not only focus on losing fat, but also on posture and developing my muscle strength, this will give me an advantage in my mindset on staying healthy, or even better, becoming more healthy.

I have never felt that I'm obese but according to this research I may put on weight, and I will manage to prevent this condition as I will change my lifestyle, diet, and exercise.
As for the body types i.e Endomorph, Ectomorph, and Mesomorph, these types of body are scientifically not proven as I did not find any research on these body types, although they are written but not proven scientifically.

As a person who wants to get a healthy life, this scientific body type quiz was very important to me. Now I am sure about my real body type and the articles on this site also helped me learn how to maintain it.

There are many people in my family and community that are experiencing obesity now, but because of my new knowledge i gained from this test I'm going to work with them to fight against this problem. I will help them understand their body type so they will then work at a healthy life.

I did not know until now that somatotypes are not scientific and are highly disputed taxonomy developed in the 1940s by American psychologist William Herbert Sheldon. They categorize the human physique according to arbitrary shapes which he subjectively classified ectomorphic, mesomorphic, and endomorphic. It is said it combines frame size and level of body fat and muscle mass to height: Endomorph – broad frame, higher body fat, Mesomorph – medium frame, more muscular, Ectomorph – slender, less fat and muscle mass.

But I look hard in Google and could find no scientific evidence or backing for those somatotypes/three body types and the facts are they aren't based on any science https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-science-behind-the-ectomorph-mesomorph-and-endomorph-bodytypes-if-there-is-any

Thought Provoking, Helps Me Understand My Real Scientific Body Type Including Genetically Underdeveloped Muscles & Skinny Fat

As someone who has been active all her life and has always stressed the importance of well-being, I am startled by my scientific body type quiz results. I have been educated that genetics, lifestyle, diet, and exercise are all main contributors to overall health. Until now, I used the somatotype three body types as a measure of my body type, I was a mesomorph. Yet, I was not aware at all of the lack of any scientific backing and overall unscientific nature of the 3 body type standards (endomorph, ectomorph, mesomorph). Over the years, I have been told time and again by my different physicians that I am "obese", although they did not and do not recognize the body type label mesomorph or any somatotype. I always thought it quite absurd that I was considered obese when I was a seventeen-year-old and 118-pounds, which was well within my safe BMI. How can I be called obese by my doctor when I am well within their safe BMI standard of not being obese?

I played competitive soccer and was a tennis player and was very active. I wondered about how the current inaccurate scientific body type standards (BT1, BMI, BMR) made no sense since I was well within my safe BMI and doing so much exercise -- a minimum of 60 minutes of cardio, 30 minutes of resistance training -- was steadfast into healthy social practices, and generally doing well with my mental health.

Before thoroughly reviewing the Body Type Science reading material I initially assumed I was Body Type Two, even though I knew I was "fatter" as per the images and info on this site. Probably wishful thinking on my part as I really wanted to not be a Body Type Three. But, I cannot deny the fact that I am currently 149 lbs which is overweight when compared to my safe BMI weight range (my maintenance weight goal is about 130 lbs, which is right at my safe BMI). After more careful reading of the scientific information on this site and consideration of my body type quiz results, I changed my mind from me being a Body Type Two to a BT3, due to all the fat and skinny fat and cellulite on my body where there should be muscle.

The extensive information on The Four Body Types from my quiz results and how things correlate with genetically underdeveloped vertebrae and muscles and mass has increased my understanding of my real scientific body type. I now confidently consider myself currently a Body Type Three. Understanding my scientifically defined BT3 does not make me feel bad about myself or my body at all. When I thought I was a mesomorph, I thought I was a subjective, arbitrary apple fruit shape that I could not change, and that was that. Instead, now I am inspired and have real understanding and hope that I can increase the development of my genetically underdeveloped muscles with the right diet, exercise, and lifestyle to overcome my obesity and skinny fat, something I did not consider or think was even possible before.

Hello Ella - the modern scientific term is "normal weight obesity", a type of skinny fat - meaning even though you are within safe BMI, you are still dealing with a type of obesity. Mainstream science and medical doctors have no explanation for this, nor any real explanation for any kind of skinny fat including cellulite.

Skinny fat is genetic. Where you have skinny fat in place of where there should be muscle/mass as per the Standard Scientific Human Body Anatomy Book Body Type One (BT1) found in any scientifically accepting human anatomy book, is genetic.

As it is a genetic fact that any part of the human body can be underdeveloped, it is a scientific fact that muscle/mass on any part of the human body can be underdeveloped. Just as it is a fact that each vertebra houses specific muscles which make up the scaffolding and structure of the human body it is also a fact that each vertebra and corresponding muscle/mass directly affects posture and the overall structure of the human body, in general.

As you have stated that even when you are within safe BMI weight range you still deal with a type of obesity, normal weight obesity, that your doctor(s) confirm -- on a scale of 1-10, 10 being 100% scientifically accurate, how accurate would you say that your Scientific Body Type Quiz, Body Type Three Results are? Please give a brief explanation as to why.

Thank you for the additional information. This clears up some matters for me.

On a scale of 1-10, I give my results of a Body Type Three a rating of 9. For the most part, I believe this result is true. One factor preventing me from rating this result a 10 is that I know there is always more to research and discover. But the body type quiz results make sense, and being able to define my body type scientifically allows me to view my body in a new way so I can better identify the proper diet, exercise, and lifestyle to increase muscles and mass and reduce skinny fat, cellulite, and normal weight obesity as much as I can.

As a registered nurse, this body type quiz is a real eye-opener. Now, I know my body type and the factors that come into play as it regards my body (genetics, diet, exercise and lifestyle).
With this, i have a better understanding of how to go about my intended weight loss and posture correction program.
A big 'thank you' to the team who created this amazing quiz.

I started working out again seriously after taking the body type quiz last month.
Before I started down this path, I had thought being overweight by all standards was obesity. Turns out it is really about how much fat is on my body.

The body type quiz helped me realize the importance of muscle mass.

I became more concerned with fat weight and being in shape and increasing my muscles and mass. I fixed my bike the next week and started to swim laps with colleagues, activities that make me want to improve me. By seeing the real health benefits of working out it is not a chore as much now.

Taking this body type quiz for women was fun and eye-opening. I got insights on body type and how various factors influence my body type. It provides information on vertebrae, muscles, bmr, body mass index, exercise, diet and lifestyle. The quiz was thorough, for a basic test.
